Artist statement

“For me, photography is the expression of a desire not to be alone, either in front or behind of the camera.”

Portrait of T. by Danny Van der Elst, photographer

For 15 years, I've dedicated myself to capturing the essence of people through photography. My approach is simple and authentic — utilizing natural light, minimal technology, and no makeup. This method reveals the true human essence, portraying beauty and vulnerability through the delicate interplay of light and shadow.

Each photo session is a personal journey, an exploration of the emotions that lie beneath the surface. My goal is to uncover the genuine emotions and stories of my subjects, portraying them respectfully and authentically.

"Why did you become who you are today, and how can I capture you genuinely?"

With over 150 photo sessions and the acclaimed GIRLS project, involving more than 100 women and exhibited internationally, my work has gained recognition for its raw and intimate portrayal of the human experience.

Photography remains my constant companion and source of life. It brings me great joy to share my work with you, allowing you to connect with the emotions and stories captured in each image.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported my journey. For recent work and a glimpse behind the scenes, please visit my Instagram.

Process

“My photography is built on good communication and mutual respect. Each session is a collaboration where I seek to capture the authentic essence of my subjects.”

Using natural light and minimal equipment, I aim for simplicity that reveals raw, unguarded emotions.

After each session, I ensure that only the images the people I work with explicitly approve are used. This approach fosters trust and allows for the creation of intimate, powerful portraits that speak to the depths of human experience.

My goal is to create a safe and respectful environment where vulnerability can be openly expressed and documented.
